Thanks for digging this one up Derek - a beautiful track, totally new to me, with shades of Barbara Mason's "Yes I'm Ready" in the chord changes and seductively deadpan lead vocal, and solid doo-wop credentials in that it was written by Don Julian of Meadowlarks / Larks fame. Karen where are you now?
I had heard several things about the mysterious Karen Small. One, she was Don Julian's niece (that's why The Larks back her up on this one), and two, shortly after her second single was released she was found murdered, and the crime is still unsolved.
Karen Smalls from Los Angeles (Fremont High School) did a lot of record hops with the Great KJFG Dj Hunter Hancock,I sen and bought her hit record "Boys Are Made To Love",I was sent to Viet Nam in 1967wish I could get that song for my oldies selection
Amazing! I've been reminiscing about songs from the sixties, when I was in junior and senior high school. The Left Banke & Karen Smallsl have come to mind a lot, even though a lot of us were groomed on Motown, surfer music and the British explosion! Karen was a classmate briefly at Washington High. She had changed schools. I was quiet and a rather get along with everyone type of student. Karen would talk to me. She wanted to really break into music. She was low keyed, quiet, but had an older grittiness about her. I was surprised when one day she shared that she was the Karen Small of "Boys are made to Love"! I kept her secret, because she was trying to work through peoples expectations & wanted to be known for herself....I remained in contact briefly, but then lost track and couldn't find how to contact her. I had told her to hang in there and I'd look to see her break out. I, too, thought something had happened to her.......she had a great voice. V.F.Banks,
