MARJORIE BLACK - ONE MORE HURT

Since this is seemingly the only record released by "Marjorie Black", I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Marjorie Black was a pseudonym used only on this record (perhaps it's one of the Soul Sisters, who also recorded on Sue?).

There is simply no way a woman with a voice like this could have only had one shot at recording, unless there was some sort of tragedy (as is the case of Junior McCants who died just as his second record was being released to radio).

"One More Hurt" is one of those records where EVERYTHING clicks; fantastic song, amazing arrangement with a bass guitar intro/ hook (how many times do we hear THAT?) and of course "Marjorie's soaring vocals.

from 1965...

One of my all time fave northern soul tracks. Thanks for posting it. I may be wrong as the label says Sue records New York City but this sounds like Detroit at it's best to me. It also sounds like Mike Terry on the Sax and I know Robert Bateman was involved in the Detroit scene in the 60's. Thanks, Dave W

Stunning. It just grew on me within about 10 seconds and suddenly I realized this tune was really not like anything else, even though it was. I'd never get to hear this stuff were it not for blogs like yours. These songs become part of my life, as if they'd always been there, it's hard to explain.

As far as I know this is my dad's little sister. Back in the day she preformed by the names Marjorie Black, Mary Black or Mary Johnson. Again... I am not sure but if this is my aunt, I was told her biggest selling 45 was "These Tears" by Mary Johnson. It sold over 500.000 singles.
