October is the end of the road for Daily 45

I started The Daily 45 six years ago (I think it was April of 2007), and over those six years I've featured nearly 2000 45's. It's given me great pleasure to share these sounds with you, and I've made many friends around the world through it, and even connected with some of the artists, songwriters, musicians, and producers of the music who reached out because they were so pleased that someone still enjoyed what they did all those years ago. Very soul satisfying, if I do say so myself!

While there are still a few elusive 45's that are still on my want list (which I'll post up either here or on my youtube page as they come into my collection), I can say that I've featured practically everything I wanna share at this point. Sure, there's hundreds of great singles that have never been featured here, but those are high-profile releases that just about everybody knows anyhow because of their popularity and staying power; I've always steered clear of featuring those.

SO, for the month of October, I'm gonna highlight some of the big ones; namely, my all time favorite 45's, and also post up some artist profiles that will feature several favorite sides from them in one post.

I'd also love to hear from YOU! What are some of your favorites that have been featured? Tell me who you are and where you are, 'cause I'd love to share your words as well.

Although it's not QUITE goodbye at this time, I would like to thank each and every person who has written to thank me for doing this; your words helped me keep on, practically every day, for these last six years. It's been a helluva ride!

Here's some ways to keep in touch:

Wow. Thank you for the great work over all the years. This site, your record collection and your research will be greatly missed.

My absolute favorite that you have featured for us is Wendy Rene on Stax doing "After Laughter". What an achingly beautiful song. http://dereksdaily45.blogspot.com/2013/05/wendy-rene-after-laughter.html

Thanks!

This was a magnificent, landmark project. Thank you sincerely for all the music you've shared and unearthed from the vaults. It meant (and still means) a lot. I was honestly surprised at how long you've been able to dig out more and more!

Wow! Sorry to hear this.
Thanks for all the great 45s. You turned me on to a lot.

So will the music blog may soon be consigned to history? It seems so many that I follow have closed down during the last 12 months. I will have to work that bit harder now to find those elusive tunes!

Thanks again, and keep digging!

Wow..thanks for the run and hope this is just a temporary hiatus. I've had many favorites over the years but did enjoy Rex Garvin Emulsified. First Time I heard that many years ago was the Yo La Tengo version.

Derek, many thanks for a superb blog from your fellow connoisseur of fine 45 RPM singles. You have turned me on to many fine finds and made me go and do a lot of crate digging. Thank you for such a superb experience. None finer. It has been fun to read.

My utmost thanks for all the fine 45s & the stories behind them. Feel free to reconsider!

Hi Derek,

Sorry to hear the news, but it's been a wonderful 6 years, and this has been one of my go-to music blogs for just about all that time. I have over 100 of the songs you've shared in my favorites playlists. Thank you for exposing me to lots of wonderful music, including the Bang Girl Group Revue as well as your own solo stuff.

Keep on rockin!

Six years is a long time. Longer than my first (and only) marrage. You had a good run- but don't be a stranger. The internet would still like to hear from you once in a while...

It was D.D.45 that inspired me to start my own blog to showcase my 45 collection a few years back. I thought- Hey, if that guy can do it, so can i! I have a shit load of records, i can post one a day too, and i've been at it ever since.

Thanks to you for giving me the idea to do so, not to mention all the killer tunes i never would have heard otherwise...

Let us know the next time yer in Chicago, I'd still love to hear you spin em live sometime.

A big thanks. I've found many doo-wop and Rockin' R'n'R blasts from the 1950's early 1960's I did not know before. Thanks for mixing them in with the soul.

Best of luck with the future, you've a lot of us a lot of pleasure.

The back drop to my rites of passage in the late 60's was soul music in underground clubs of the north of England. I thought I knew soul music until I found your blog and you opened my ears to so many great tracks.

One track that stands out is 'Little Richard - I don't know what you got....' It came as a shock as it's not the 'screaming' Little Richard I remember and more importantly, it's just so, so good. 'You're not very much to look at' is a brilliant line that always makes me smile. I think it was said to me once or twice!!!

All success to you in whatever you do next and many thanks for the best education money didn't buy.....

I was just thinking where else am I going to find gems like the last one VIVIAN REED - THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME? A really wonderful blog - perhaps my favourite of all time - sad to see it go. Good luck with whatever takes up your time in future. I thoroughly enjoyed myself here. Heartfelt thanks.

Oh no! But I just want to say thank you so much for sharing all the wonderful music. I've been following the daily 45 from about a year after you started I think. It's been a pleasure and an education too and I'm going to miss it - won't be able to stop myself coming back occasionally just in case there's anything new! It's also been pretty cool hearing about your band, your travels, getting married and so on. The personal touch and obvious love of the music made this blog even better than the songs did already.

I must admit I did wonder once or twice, 'How long can he keep this up?' Now alas that day has come, but if the Eddie Bo post is anything to go by, it'll be a great farewell party.

All time DD45 fave? I really dunno, but maybe Tony Clarke, They Call Me A Wrong Man...brutal. I love the brooders! Thanks again,

Lewis

Derek - I am so going to miss my (almost) daily ritual of enjoying your wonderful music and amazingly well-researched and written commentary. One of the best blogs ever. A favorite? So many... will have to think long & hard.

Thank you so much.

I'm sorry to see your wonderful blog come to an end but thank you so much for all the amazing music you've turned me onto over the years.

Long live the Derek's Daily 45 and all who sail her!

Thanks a million for so many great & rare songs. It's hard to choose just one highlight.

Doris & Kelley's "You Don't Have To Worry" is an amazing deep soul cut.

Ozz and His Sperlings "Daddy Rollin' Stone" might be favorite uptempo cut.

Thank you for alerting me to all the great music.
If you have time to repost the Dee Dee Ford song, that would be great.

I just want to say thanks for all your hard work and dedication for so many years. I thought I knew my way around music, but you have schooled me in so many ways. It's hard to pick favorites among the songs you turned me on to and honestly, I haven't been able to work my way through all of them yet.

Here are a few standouts among many:

Brothers of Soul - I'd Be Grateful

Those strings give me chills every time I hear them

http://dereksdaily45.blogspot.com/2013/03/brothers-of-soul-id-be-grateful.html

The Dynamics - Misery

That falsetto combined with that percussion drives me crazy everytime it pops up on my iPod

http://dereksdaily45.blogspot.com/2009/06/dynamics-misery.html

Sunny and The Sunliners - No One Else Will Do

How could I have lived my life without hearing these guys before

http://dereksdaily45.blogspot.com/2009/06/sunny-sunliners-no-one-else-will-do.html

Derek, you will be missed! You will always have my sincere appreciation.

Derek,

I'll be eternally grateful for some of the songs you made me discover and that I needed to buy on 45, so I did become a little more broke thanks to you.
Big up for all this time you spent digging, ripping, scanning, writing...

My top five would be:
The Astors - More Power To You
The Mojo Men - She's My Baby
The Ideals - The Gorilla
Marvin Smith - Have More Time
Big Maybelle - I Just Can't Wait Anylonger

Many more have been played at numerous dance parties and on my radio show as well http://canalb.fr/bnbb

Thanks again

I'm going to miss my weekly weekend fix of Derek's 45's. While most of the Detroit material you presented, I heard before, most of it I had not heard in years. But still I discovery many many more soulful sounds for the first time here. Really gonna miss ya....
