THE TRUTH - HEY GYP

One piece of info has surfaced about UK group Truth since I last featured a 45 from them back in 2009 (their cover of The Young Rascals "Sueno"); they were a vocal duo (with studio musician backing, most likely Jimmy Page on guitar) made up of Frank Aiello and Steve Jameson.

Here we find the group taking Donovan's amazing early composition "Hey Gyp" and turning it into a freakbeat rave up, dropping the parenthetical "(Dig The Slowness)" from Donovan's original. There's also an American raveup version of "Gyp" by The Soul Survivors that I featured here back in 2007, and The Truth's version predates it by about a year. I'm thinking that The Soul Survivors were definitely influenced by this (obscure) single.

from 1966...

Hey Gip is What's the matter with the mill, penned in the early 1930's by Joe Mc Coy and Memphis Minnie. Donovan took the title and copyrighted to his own.At that time, Minnie was still living but in a very bad shape and she would have badly needed her money from this hit. Donovan was contacted for thuis but he didn't even took the pen to answer. Joe Mc Coy was long dead. If not he surely would have sent to Donovan some of his Mafia friends!

You are of course right. The original tune is Can't hear it for you by Minnie and Joe Mc Coy and not What's the matter. This was what I wanted to write. Unfortunately the rest of the story is right... Sorry for this mistake

Back in the late 60's we were ordering records from the UK. I got The Truth single of Sueno by accident. I ordered a Stones 45, but they transposed the cat number. M friend liked it so much, they all ordered copies. I later found a US single of Girl/Jailer Bring Me Water. I got Hey Gyp and another on a buying trip to London.
