THE ACCENT - RED SKY AT NIGHT

Here we have the greatest British one shot of all time.

Relocated from Yorkshire to London, The Accent sadly only had one chance to record, and luckily the groundbreaking and creative Mike Vernon was behind the boards which led to this creating this absolute masterpiece of mood, folky guitars and some of the heaviest psychedelic beat committed to wax, this side of the Open Mind (remember "Magic Potion", posted here last spring?)

A real tragedy that this band wasn't given a chance to cut an LP or at least a few more singles as who KNOWS what else they may have come up with. However, it's kinda cool in a way that their one release is simply flawless. Too bad more people haven't heard it throughout the years. Kind of amazing that this record was released in the US at all; however, as this was the day when creativity ran free and the suits had no idea what those crazy kids were doing, musicians were able to freely explore their creativity. Too bad that hasn't been the case for a LONG time.

Too bad is right. Isn't ironic that we now rock the suits! haha

I love this record.. I picked up a copy back in the early 80's just cos the title sounded promising and was totaly blown away by it. One of my all time fave 60's 45's.. along with the Open Mind 45 and Tintern Abbey.. another perfect one shot. Cheers, Dave

The Accent were Rick Birkett (guitar), John Hebron (vocals, guitar), Alan Davies (bass), and Pete Beetham (drums). Originally called the Blue Blood Group before relocating to London, where they began making a serious name for themselves with their hard attack on their instruments and a heavy psychedelic sound, gaining a residency at the Upper Cut Club. They came to the attention of Mike Vernon, who produced "Red Sky at Night," on Deram. Rick Birkett later recorded on Vernon's Blue Horizon label under the name Rick Hayward and was a member of the Zombies and Jellybread. "Red Sky at Night" has re-appeared on the Deram compilation “The Psychedelic Scene” released in 1998 and is cheaply and easily available. A good compilation that includes the Human Instinct, the Plague, Felius Andromeda (superb!!!!) and the Poets amongst many more.
