LAZY LESTER - SUGAR COATED LOVE b/w I'M A LOVER NOT A FIGHTER
Behold, perhaps the greatest two sided blues 45 ever released! Although in the case of this record, blues is a tag that only partially applies (and truly, pigeonholing music can be very limiting anyhow)
These two tracks from Louisiana's Lazy Lester bridge the gap where blues, rock n roll and proto-soul intersect.
Sadly, Lester has claimed that he wrote both of these numbers although he was not credited, and was cheated out of the royalties not only from his own recordings but from the numerous covers of these songs that have been cut throughout the years. This bad scene eventually caused Lester to quit the music business for several years.

Great record - thanks for posting. Hadn't heard Sugar Coated Love but rest assured I'll be playing I'm A Lover Not A Fighter at the Deluxe Diner in Glastonbury this weekend - along with some more killer rockin' blues numbers! hope you're good dude - thanks a million for the Bay Area diggin' guide. just posted it up and when I've got the chance I'll add a San Francisco page to the Record Shop section on the Get Involved site.
I very familiar with Lazy Lester's songs. It's great to hear these recorded from the original 45. Thank you!
Lazy Lester is brilliant. I saw him play at the Ponderosa Stomp - named after a tune of his - down in New Orleans a couple of years ago. He's still got it. W.
Yeah! I saw Lester at the Stomp as well; amazing! Jem, thank you for taking the time out to comment; helps keep me going.
Hey I know I'm a bit slow with this comment but just realised that the CD I got of Lazy Lesters Excello singles (I Hear You Knockin-The Excello Singles) has a slightly dif version of I'm a Lover not a Fighter &....yours posted is the better. Reckon the compiler of the comp probably got his alt take mixed up with the original. Makes me want to go get my money back.
