KRIS PETERSON - MAMA'S LITTLE BABY IS A BIG GIRL NOW

Here's another hot Detroit 45! Kris Peterson released a few other 45's, and went on to be a guest vocalist with the likes of P-Funk and Frank Zappa. This is "the one" though. Originally released on a small Detroit label, it was picked up by Capitol for national distribution. Surprising that it wasn't a huge hit!

from 1967...

Don't be silly. I am flattered that you like the song. I talked to Artie Fields (producer, Mama's Little Baby)a couple of days ago about "Just As Much", which was the follow up to "Mama's Little Baby". There has been a demand for this follow up record online. There doesn't seem to be any left anywhere as well as the master tapes have been mis-placed. My next step is to find out from Artie if there is any un-released recordings of mine. Chris Flanagan of "Street Corner Music" in Southfield, MI has expressed an interest in releasing said recordings if any. There was another album that I released with Ritchie Haven's label, Stormy Forest, sub. of MGM in 1972, "A Child's Dream". I got to live in New York for 2 years (yay me). At this time I did some background work with an artist named, "Jobriath" whose material was produced by Eddie Kramer. Morrisey has recently bought the masters from Eddie Kramer and has released, "Creatures of the Street", (I think is the name of this album). I was also on Frank Zappas', "Waka Ja Waka . I am also on a locally released album, "Blue Spirit Tribe", I have three original songs on this album. This is the first time that anything that I have written was released on album. Other than this, I am just sitting here, doing cat rescue work, and thanking you for being a fan. By the way, if you haven't heard as yet, Mike Terry died about six months ago. He was the baritone saxaphone on all of Mo-Towns' releases and the author and producer of "Just As Much". Were all getting old, man.

Kris, did you know that you are mentioned in the biography of the Flying Burrito Brothers? They talk about going into a club in Detroit c1969 and you were on stage!

Unknown said...

No, I did not know this. What is the name of the book? I hope that they said good things!!!

Kris, sorry that it took so long to respond. the book is called "Hot Burrito" and it talks about Chris Ethridge taking the rest of the band into a club in Detroit while on tour, where they see you performing. They make the mistake of saying you were signed to Motown...

Cool!! Thank you. I will have to buy it.

Wonderful song! I will be playing your song "Promise" on my show, The Electro-Phonic Sound of Brian Phillips. Listen for it sometime after August 9th. This side and "Hard Sometimes" are fantastic! Do you have any recollections about Yusuf Rahman or either of these songs?

Click my name to hear this month's show.

Just a tidbit of info: Kris only appeared on one track of Frank Zappa. "Your Mouth" which is on Frank's Waka/Jawaka album. She knew Sal (Marquez, trumpet and vocals) and he brought her in to overdub vocals as a duo just on that track. IT appears to be the only connection that I know of.

Over at another blog -> http://lapellenera.blogspot.com/
another of her tracks is up (and still there). Just put her name in the search box.

Yes, it is true. I was on the duo "Your Mouth" with Sal Marquez on Frank Zappa's "Waka Ja Waka". But, what is not listed is that I overdubbed vocals in unison with the horns on "Big Swifty" on the same album. Also, I was the second voice on Jobriath's "Scumbag", from the album "Lonley Planet Boy". I also did background vocal on the cuts, "Lighten Up", and "Street Corner Love". The tracks to this album were bought from Eddie Kramer and re-released by Morrisey a couple of years ago.

I remember hanging out with you in NYC when you were recording at Electric Lady studios. you introduced me to Stevie Wonder(your homeboy!). I also remember lots of other things about that year! Whew! If you get a chance drop me a note on facebook. There's a photo there of our band Rockhouse. Lotsa Love...Jerry Swalla

I would love to heard this, but I don't see a download link. Am I missing it? Kris will be on my show for an interview in September and I'd like to maybe play the tracks on that episode:
