WILLIE & THE HANDJIVES - GOTTA FIND A NEW LOVE

Yet another mystery...I'm guessing it a New York group? Any info is always appreciated! I really dig how the song seems like it can explode at any time but keeps itself restrained but steady.

from 1966...

A. Williams in the writing credit. Could possibly be an Andre Williams arrangement? Sounds like his kinda guitar lick.

Just a wild guess, but I think Willie and the Handjives might be a 'nom de wax' for Bobby Poe and Vernon Sandusky. Note the production credit.

Poe and Sandusky, along with Al Downing, issued one single under the name Bobby Poe and the Polecats and then another using the name Bobby Brant and the Rhythm Rockers in the late 50's

What's strange about all this is that those records are rockabilly. However, Poe had a great voice, and it sure does sound like him singing on this side. [btw, Sandusky was a guitar player].

My theory is that Poe and Sandusky made a move to update their sound and decided to use a different name.

Of course, I could be totally wrong.

This kinda blows my theory...but wikipedia says Bobby Poe also managed and produced the Chartbusters [with Sandusky on guitar], and the British Walkers [which included Roy Buchanan].

So, Poe and Sandusky did produce other bands and I'm probably wrong...

Note to self: check wikipedia first...

This one-off was the first record by Don Downing, the younger brother of Big Al Downing who worked with Bobby Poe for years.

"A.Williams" is Anthony Ray Williams but who exactly he is
I don't know.

There's another, later, version of
"Gotta .." by the Yo Yos on Goldwax.
